UBBC and several members held an online forum to discuss future opportunities and specific upcoming events.
Christophe Michels initially introduced two new advisory members: Mark Irwin, previously CEO of Serco, and Hans Nijkamp, formerly a senior director at Shell. Mark gave his overview of the motivations for supporting Ukraine, the business rationale for the UK, and why members should support Ukraine. He also outlined the medium- and long-term opportunities arising from the country’s reconstruction and development.
Hans Nijkamp described his expertise in energy systems and the energy transition, and how this experience could be deployed in Ukraine and for the benefit of members. Both are available to consult and will also help lead UBBC’s business thinking and strategic advice.
Ashley Goodall then gave an outline of upcoming events, including the trip to Kyiv from 15th to 18th June, the types of companies members are expected to meet, and the planned engagements during the visit.
Following this, there was a discussion about the upcoming conference on 23rd September at Hogan Lovells. Subjects under discussion included finance, investment and privatisation; reconstruction and energy; intellectual property and UK technology opportunities; education and the future economy; and defence and security. Several members contributed to the discussion, and all participants were encouraged to invite contacts and business partners.
Further discussion followed regarding the reconstruction conference in Gdańsk in June. Finally, it was announced that the Council’s summer party will take place on 16th July in Parliament from 5 to 7 pm.
Several members contributed to the discussion, including NM Capital, Acrow, Burns & Wilcox, Zaha Hadid Architects and Bath Spa University, before the meeting concluded.
